MAVIS TEO

About
I am an intrepid traveller who believes that the heart of a destination is found in its people. I write for Nikkei Asia, South China Morning Post, The Straits Times, CNA, DestinAsian, The Peak, Grazia, and A+.
While I admit to being a hotel snob—at one point, I was reviewing over 30 hotels a year—I find the greatest satisfaction in telling the stories of those who give a place its soul. I hope to write more stories that shatter stereotypes. I am most fulfilled when my work challenges assumptions and spotlights overlooked communities or countries miscast by others.
I hope that by sharing the warmth, resilience, and kindness I have encountered on my journeys, I can inspire readers to see the world and its people afresh, just as my own adventures have done for me.
While on assignment, I value my time on the ground, allowing my story to unfold organically and letting my findings lead the way, rather than assumptions or editorial preconceptions.
An adrenaline junkie, I am also an avid horse rider and diver. Besides equestrianism, diving, yachting, and marine conservation, I also enjoy writing about culinary culture.
To afford the luxury of being a travel writer, I do other work as well. Because of my experience in hotels, I am well-placed to advise hotels on giving their target clientele the ultimate experience. I also consult on media outreach for businesses, particularly in hospitality and travel.
